How We Research

We want you to trust what you read here, so here’s exactly how our guides are made.

What we do

  • Read the specs. We compare manufacturer specs, certifications (for example UL 2034 for carbon monoxide alarms) and warranty terms.
  • Read lots of owner reviews. We look for patterns across hundreds of real buyer reviews, especially the 1- to 3-star ones, where problems show up.
  • Check expert and safety sources. Where safety is involved, we lean on sources like the CDC, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Park Service.
  • Think about car camping specifically. Size when packed, power draw, cold-weather performance and price matter more to us than ultralight weight.

What we don’t do

We don’t claim to have personally tested every product. When a guide is based on research rather than hands-on use, we say so. If we do test something ourselves, we’ll tell you how.

Prices and updates

Prices change often. The prices on our pages were accurate when we checked them, but always confirm the current price on the retailer’s site. We update guides when better or cheaper options come out.

Affiliate links

Some links earn us a commission if you buy. Brands can’t pay to be included or ranked, and commissions don’t affect our picks.
